The original novel already served as the basis for a rather superb anime in the late 80s, Hayao Miyazaki‘s follow up to My Neighbour Totoro. It’s a rather sweet story of a young witch, undertaking a year of independent work as part of her apprenticeship, running a delivery service on her broomstick and, in typical Ghibli fashion, learning a lot about herself through overcoming adversity.
This image, published by Eiga, shows Shoshiba Fuka in character as Kiki and apparently on one of the film’s sets. It looks almost as stylised as the hand-drawn version.
I look forward to seeing Jiji, her talking, black cat familiar.
The film will open across Japan next Spring. Even if it doesn’t get distribution in the West, DVD and Blu-ray importing is very, very easy…
