On the eve of the brand new season of Doctor Who, yesterday the BBC and Federation Against Copyright Theft teamed up to close a long-standing fansite. Following an in-person visit, Doctor Who Media shut down immediately. Its domain name will soon be taken over by the BBC.

doctorwhoIn just a few hours time the brand new season of Doctor Who will premiere, kicking off with the first episode ‘Deep Breath’. There’s been a huge build up in the media, but for fans who prefer to socialize and obtain news via a dedicated community, today brings bad news.

Doctor Who Media (DWM) was a site created in 2010 and during the ensuing four and a half years it amassed around 25,000 dedicated members.

A source close to the site told TF that since nothing like it existed officially, DWM’s core focus was to provide a central location and community for everything in the “Whoniverse”, from reconstructions of missing episodes to the latest episodes, and whatever lay between.

But yesterday, following a visit by representatives from the BBC and Federation Against Copyright Theft, the site’s operator took the decision to shut down the site for good.

“I had a knock at the door and a couple of guys were there. One from FACT and one from BBCWW [BBC Worldwide]. The FACT guy basically explained what the issue was, said that he was there to give a cease and desist and wanted the domain transferred,” the site’s operator informs TorrentFreak.

With threats of executing an official search warrant and taking the matter to court if terms could not be reached, there was never any question of embarking on a losing battle. With the user database secured, an agreement was quickly reached to close down the site and transfer the domain.

Interestingly, however, the domain name will not be going to FACT as is usually the case. Doctor Who Media’s operator told TF that it will be transferred to the BBC as there are trademark issues involved.

“DWM may have been a major factor of my life for the past few years, but I wasn’t going to let it ruin me, so I agreed, signed, the guy wrote down his mobile number in case there were any issues and then they went. They were about as nice as you could expect given the situation. It’s only a job after all,” he concludes.

The tip about the site’s shutdown came from a DWM user who told TF that he’ll be sad to see its doors close for the final time.

“I can’t speak for others but having that content available really helped raise my interest level in Doctor Who. Often times, having watched stuff there led to me purchasing the exact same content on iTunes as well as all the various other content available for Doctor Who,” he explained.

And now, all eyes turn to the season premiere tonight. As of yesterday, all but the final episode of the brand new season had leaked to file-sharing sites, although it’s worth pointing out that Doctor Who Media refused to carry any of that content.

Will the leaks have a positive or negative impact on viewing figures? There’s only a few hours to find out, but it’s doubtful the BBC will be weeping following tonight’s episode.

FX Picks Up Season 2 of “The Strain”

This makes me very happy! I am a huge fan of the book series and was a tad nervous when I first started watching the series. Anytime a book is made into a film or TV series your mental image of the characters change, but they did an excellent job of casting and keeping things as close to the books as possible. If you haven’t seen the TV show or read the books, and are a fan of Vampires and Zombies, you need to get caught up!

LOS ANGELES, August 19, 2014 – FX has ordered a 13-episode second season of its newest hit drama series The Strain from Guillermo del Toro and Carlton Cuse, it was announced today by John Landgraf, CEO, FX Networks and FX Productions. Season 2 of The Strain is scheduled to debut in the summer of 2015. There are seven all-new episodes remaining in Season 1 airing Sundays at 10 PM ET/PT on FX.

The Strain marks the first time FX has aired an original series on Sunday night and the move has shown its mettle, ranking as the #1 new series on cable (broadcast or premium) in 2014 in delivery of Adults 18-49. The series also recorded the most-watched series premiere in FX history with 12.7 million Total Viewers, which surpassed the network’s initial projection of 10 million Total Viewers. The Strain is the first drama series produced solely by FXP (FX Productions).

Due to the popularity of the show, Fox Home Entertainment will release Season 1 of The Strain on DVD and Blu-ray(TM) everywhere on December 2.

“We’ve never had any doubts about The Strain,” said John Landgraf. “Working with Guillermo del Toro, Carlton Cuse, and the brilliant cast led by Corey Stoll has been everything we had hoped it would be and more. It is thrilling when you have a show that is a creative and commercial hit, which is a rare accomplishment in this increasingly crowded marketplace. We look forward having it on FX for as long as Carlton, Guillermo and Chuck Hogan need to tell this epic tale.”

On a weekly basis, the critically acclaimed series is averaging 11 million Total Viewers and 5.2 million Adults 18-49 inclusive of VOD and online viewing (most current and will increase with the accumulation of more data). On a first-run only Live+7 basis, the series is averaging 4.5 million Total Viewers and 2.6 million Adults 18-49. The Strain’s 1.2 million Adults 18-34 (first-run L+7) places it in a tie for the top spot in that demo among all new cable series to launch in 2014.

“I am thrilled! Another season to spread the virus!” said del Toro, who directed the pilot and co-wrote the best-selling books The Strain with Chuck Hogan. “Working with Carlton, Chuck and FX has been immensely rewarding and we have such sights to unveil in the upcoming episodes – the blood hits the fan on this one, mankind becomes an endangered species.”

Cuse said, “It’s been immensely satisfying over the last year-and-a-half to work with the incredible team at FX, Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan to bring The Strain to life. I am grateful for all the blood, sweat and tears (but mostly blood) given to the project by all involved, and I could not be more excited to continue telling this epic story.”

The first six episodes of The Strain are currently available on FX’s VOD platform FXNOW for authenticated subscribers of the network, and future episodes will be available after they air on FX.

In next week’s 7th episode, “For Services Rendered” (airs this Sunday, August 24 at 10:00 PM ET/PT), Setrakian, Eph, and Nora formulate a plan to track down the Master using Jim as bait. Eichhorst and Setrakian’s pasts are revealed. At the Luss home, Neeva struggles to protect the children while encountering a mysterious stranger whose help she may not want. Teleplay by Bradley Thompson & David Weddle; directed by Charlotte Sieling.

The Strain is a high concept thriller from Co-Creators, Executive Producers and Writers Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan. The series, starring Corey Stoll, David Bradley, Mia Maestro, Sean Astin, Kevin Durand, Natalie Brown, Jonathan Hyde, Richard Sammel, Jack Kesy, Ben Hyland and Miguel Gomez, tells the story of “Dr. Ephraim Goodweather” (Stoll), the head of the Center for Disease Control Canary Team in New York City. Goodweather and his team are called upon to investigate a mysterious viral outbreak with hallmarks of an ancient and evil strain of vampirism. As the strain spreads, Eph, his team, and an assembly of everyday New Yorkers, wage war for the fate of humanity itself. Emmy(R) Award winning Writer and Producer Carlton Cuse serves as Executive Producer, Showrunner and Writer. Guillermo del Toro is Executive Producer and he Directed the Pilot episode. Chuck Hogan is Executive Producer and Writer. Gary Ungar also serves as Executive Producer.

Guillermo del Toro and Cuse are represented by WME.

It’s been a busy day of announcements for Warner Brothers. They scheduled release dates for ten DC Comics movies all the way through 2020, not to mention two unnamed would-be blockbusters, which many out there believe to be sequels to Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them. And now we have a few more: according to the Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has set two untitled animated films for May 25, 2018, and May 24, 2019, hoping to own each year’s respective Memorial Day weekend. Insiders are suggesting these movies are going to be even more follow-ups to this year’s super successful The Lego Movie, which grossed $468 million worldwide at the beginning of this year. The Lego Movie 2 already has a May 26, 2017 release date, so these two dates are likely for Lego 3 and maybe even part 4, although it is possible that the Lego Ninjago spin-off could claim the 2018 date.

The Lego Movie was one of the first financially successful animated films to be released from Warners Bros., who have never had a much luck when it comes to their animated movie output (despite producing some genius movies like The Iron Giant). The film, which only cost $60 million to produce, was extremely profitable, so it’s no surprise that they want to make this one of their staple franchises for the rest of the decade. The first movie featured the voices of some talented A-listers, including Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman. It isn’t  known if all of these actors are coming back for sequels, but I imagine we’ll start learning more about both of these sequels very, very soon.

AMC Theater Chain Spending $600M to Add Fully Reclining Seats

via: Hollywood Reporter

AMC Entertainment Holdings is spending $600 million to remodel its theaters with larger, fully reclining seats.

AMC, which is the nation’s second-largest theater chain, plans to install “La-Z-Boy-type seats” that fully recline in its theaters, according to the Wall Street Journal. The new seats will be 60 inches wide vs. the current 44 inches.

As a result, between 50 percent and 70 percent of seats in a given theater will be removed to make room for the larger chairs. AMC estimates that the renovations will cost between $350,000 and $500,000 per theater, with 1,800 of its nearly 5,000 auditoriums targeted for the upgrades, which will be carried out over the next five years. According to AMC, attendance in the theaters that have already been updated has jumped an average of 80 percent, despite having fewer seats, although the exhibitor declined to give any further breakdown.

AMC CEO Gerry Lopez said the jump is partially due to the full dine-in capabilities offered in some of the renovated theaters. Meanwhile, tickets for the renovated theaters are expected to cost between $1 and $2 more than the traditional theaters after a one-year grace period. Domestic movie attendance has stayed relatively flat over the past decade. The number of tickets sold in the U.S. declined by 1.5 percent from 2012 to 2013, according to MPAA data.

Arrow Targets Brandon Routh to Play Major DC Comics Superhero in Season 3

Brandon Routh is set to play another DC Comics super man — this time on Arrow.

The erstwhile Man of Steel is joining the CW hit’s third season in the recurring role of Ray Palmer, aka DC superhero The Atom, TVLine has learned exclusively.

An unparalleled scientist and inventor, Ray will play an unexpected role in the lives of Oliver and (rumored love interest) Felicity as the new owner of Queen Consolidated. Palmer’s plans for Queen Consolidated’s Applied Sciences Division will be shrouded in mystery.

In addition to his myriad comic book appearances, Ray/The Atom — who can alter the size of his body as well as Brandon Routh Arrow The Atomother objects — has turned up in numerous animated series, including, most recently, Cartoon Network’s Young JusticeArrow marks one of the character’s rare live-action incarnations.

Déjà vu watch: Although The Atom isn’t able to fly like Superman, he can simulate flight a la Wonder Woman.

Also joining Arrow this fall — as previously reported by TVLine — are Sin City‘s Devon Aoki (as DC Comics superheroine “Katana”), Karl Yune (as Oliver’s Hong Kong handler/Katana’s husband Maseo Yamashiro), and Peter Stormare (as Count Vertigo).

Routh’s TV credits include NBC’s late, much-missed Chuck, CBS’ short-lived Partners and, more recently, Crackle’s Chosen and Fox’s Enlisted.

Arrow premieres its third season on Wednesday, Oct. 8.

Nathan Fillion to Cameo in “Guardians of the Galaxy” *Not as NOVA*

via: ComicBookResources

There’s good news for Nathan Fillion fans: He will make a cameo in “Guardians of the Galaxy.” But there’s also bad news for Nova fans: The rumors he’s playing the Human Rocket “have been greatly (and entirely) exaggerated,” according to director James Gunn.

Gunn took to Twitter to squash a rumor that appeared on the internet Saturday:

However, in a response to a followup question, Gunn did confirm that the “Firefly” and “Castle” actor will appear in the film:

Fillion has previously appeared in two other Gunn films, “Super” and “Slither.”

Danger Mouse to return to TV screens

via: BBC News

The new series, featuring the fearless white rodent secret agent and his trusty sidekick Penfold, is due to be broadcast on CBBC in 2015.

The show originally ran from 1981 to 1992 and Danger Mouse was voiced by actor Sir David Jason.

CBBC controller Cheryl Taylor said the new show would “win over a whole new generation of fans”.

Danger Mouse’s producers and animators will be FremantleMedia along with Boulder Media.

Ms Taylor said: “Danger Mouse is the last word in debonair and delightfully eccentric heroics,” adding, “CBBC is thrilled to be kick-starting their adventures afresh.”

In the original show, each 10-minute episode saw Danger Mouse, who sported an eye patch and the letters DM on his chest, tackle a new mystery and enemy, such as the notorious Duckula.

Some of these characters will be returning for the new series along with new gadgets, locations, villains and vehicles.

Hapless hamster Penfold – who was originally voiced by comedian Terry Scott – will also return.

Danger Mouse’s eye patch will be replaced by an “i-patch” with multiple technological functions and his headquarters too will be kitted out with “state-of-the-art wizardry”, said Fremantle in a statement.

The voice actors for Danger Mouse and Penfold have not yet been announced.

Fremantle’s Rick Glanker said: “The thrills, spills and comedy of this landmark international animated series are all still here but this rebooted version will be brought up-to-date for today’s tech-savvy and content-hungry kids.

“In this new 21st-Century version the laughs are set to be even louder as the world’s smallest secret agent faces mightier missions, voracious villains and knee-trembling threats.”

Danger Mouse was also a big hit outside the UK, including the US, Australia, France, Poland, Germany and Sweden.

It also led to a long-running comic strip adaptation in children’s magazine Look-In.

Fantastical Artist and ‘Alien’ Creator H.R. Giger has Died

via: Swissinfo

The renowned Swiss artist H.R. Giger has died at the age of 74, as a result of injuries sustained in a fall. Giger, who passed away in a Zurich hospital, was most famous for the alien monster he created for the movie of the same name.

Giger’s so-called biomechanoids represent a large share of his workThe terrifying creature and sets he created for Ridley Scott’s film earned him an Oscar for special effects in 1980. In the art world, Giger is appreciated for his wide body of work in the fantastic realism and surrealistic genres.

His talent for scaring movie audiences was repeated in Poltergeist 2 (1986), Alien 3 (1992) and Species (1995). Computer game fans were able to enjoy his work in Dark Seed in 1995.

Film work was just one of his talents. Giger is also known for his sculptures, paintings and furniture. The H.R. Giger Museum, inaugurated in the summer of 1998 in the Château St. Germain, is a four-level building complex in the historic, medieval walled city of Gruyères. It is the permanent home to many of the artist’s most prominent works.

However his art is not for people with weak nerves. Critic Fritz Billeter once wrote that Giger’s work was “loaded with eroticism tending often towards the shocking and the sadistic” and sometimes taking the form of an “orgiastic cult”.

‘Acid view’

Giger’s so-called biomechanoids represent a large share of his work. His representations of these creatures is a mixture of human and mechanical parts, with a strong focus on sexuality that can be disturbing for the viewer.

These biomechanoids are to be seen in many of Giger’s paintings and drawings, but the theme is also common to his sculptures and furniture.

In a report to mark Giger’s 70th birthday, Tobia Bezzola, curator of Zurich’s fine arts museum, said he appreciated Giger and worked with him on two exhibitions at the museum in 1995 and 2005. Bezzola said he particularly enjoyed the artist’s acid view of society that occasionally led him to blasphemous outbursts.

“Giger is for me one of the most important Swiss artists of the second half of the 20th century,” said Bezzola.

He pointed out the artist’s use of film and other art forms that helped people sharpen their visual perception. He also believed that Giger should be as highly rated as Swiss giants such as the architect Le Corbusier or fellow artist Max Bill.

Hans Rudolf Giger was born in Chur, canton Graubünden in 1940. He studied architecture and industrial design at Zurich’s School of Applied Arts.

He began work as an interior designer in 1966, before becoming a full-time artist and filmmaker in 1968.

Giger’s biggest problem was that he was not always appreciated by Swiss culture specialists. His decision to become involved in popular culture forms such as fantasy films, record covers and so forth led to worldwide recognition and success that may have made him suspect to some.

Giger’s album covers for Debbie Harry and the band ELP were voted among the 100 best in music history in a survey of rock journalists.

“In America, there wouldn’t have been a problem,” Bezzola told “New York’s museum of modern art is running a Tim Burton exhibition. His characters are drawn directly from graphic novel genre or horror movies.”

Despite his Oscar, Giger was never really recognised by the establishment in Switzerland; he was ignored between 1967 and 1970 when he applied for federal grants.

X-Men: Apocalypse – Bryan Singer confirms James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult, wants to add Gambit and Nightcrawler!

via: FlickeringMyth

We’re still over a month away from the release of X-Men: Days of Future Past, but attention is already starting to turn towards 20th Century Fox’s next mutant superhero offering X-Men: Apocalypse, with director Bryan Singer and writer-producer Simon Kinberg taking the opportunity to discuss their adaptation of the classic X-Men tale Age of Apocalypse during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“[X-Men: Days of Future Past] won’t necessarily create an alternate universe, but there may be some swapping things that I’m playing with,” states Singer, who is directing his third X-Men movie with this year’s sequel. “You won’t feel at the end of the movie that it set up Apocalypse. What it does is it sets up possibilities. But what we’ll discover in Apocalypse is that events in this movie made that happen. Apocalypse deals with ancient mutancy. What would humans have thought mutants were? What would mutants think humans were? You’re dealing with gods and things like that. And what if one survived and what if that found its way into our world?”

Singer went on to reveal that James McAvoy (Professor Xavier), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique) and Nicholas Hoult (Beast) are all contractually obligated to return (and Hugh Jackman is bound to be in there somewhere, surely?), while he also name dropped Gambit and Nightcrawler as possible additions: “I’m excited because I want to start introducing familiar characters at different ages and also explore the ‘80s.”

As it happens, that’s the second time that Singer has mentioned Gambit and Nightcrawler forApocalypse, so I guess that means they’re going to be back. Of course, it remains to be seen whether Taylor Kitsch will reprise his role as the Cajun card-thrower from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, while Alan Cumming will presumably be too old for a return as a younger version of Nightcrawler.

And finally, Kinberg (who is also serving as writer and producer on The Fantastic Four) added that we should expect to see some large scale destruction when X-Men: Apocalypse arrives in 2016: “From a visual standpoint it actually may be a bigger movie than Days of Future Past because there’ll be disaster movie imagery, like the title would imply.”

Before we get to Apocalypse, there’s the small matter of X-Men: Days of Future Past, which opens on May 22nd with McAvoy, Fassbender, Lawrence, Hoult and Jackman joined in the cast by X-veterans Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Lucas Till (Havok), Halle Berry (Storm), Anna Paquin (Rogue), Ellen Page (Kitty Pryde), Shawn Ashmore (Iceman) and Daniel Cudmore (Colossus) alongside franchise newcomers Evan Peters (American Horror Story) as Quicksilver, Booboo Stewart (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) as Warpath, Omar Sy (The Intouchables) as Bishop, Fan Binbing (Iron Man 3) as Blink, Adan Canto (The Following) as Sunspot, Evan Jonigkeit (The Following) as Toad, Josh Helman (Mad Max: Fury Road) as William Stryker, and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) as Bolivar Trask. Red Dwarf Season 11 Confirmed With Filming Date

via: WhatCulture

Great news for fans of comedy science-fiction series Red Dwarf as an eleventh series is a reality. It has been a year and a half since the end of Red Dwarf X and news of a follow-up has been few and far between, with the last piece of news coming in January when John-Jules said that a series was being written.

A big update came during the Sci-Fi Scarborough convention on Saturday a Red Dwarf panel comprised of Chris Barrie, Danny John-Jules and Robert Llewellyn confirmed the news. John-Jules said that shooting is scheduled to get under-way in October 2014 with a view to being aired on Dave in Autumn 2015.

The panel were also asked about their favourite episodes with Llewellyn and John-Jules voicing their jealousy of not being part of ‘Marooned’ causing Barrie to joke that their absence is what made it such a strong episode. Llewellyn personally enjoyed shooting ‘Lemons’ because of the variety of smells, citing that cinnamon was much better than the usual smell of wet paint.

Questioned about the fan favourite opening to ‘Tongue Tied’ John-Jules said that he had tremendous fun and that the looks of jealousy from Charles and Barrie were legitimate, as was him being oblivious to them because he was having too much fun doing his routine but said that they all worked perfectly for the characters personalities. Barrie laughed at the thought of being able to re-enact it saying that he couldn’t even remember his routine on the day.

Speaking about the wardrobe and make-up, Llewellyn being thankful that the application of the silicon Kryten mask has reduced over time from the original 8 hours to a much shorter 2 hour process, while Barrie enjoyed only needing to put a H on his forehead. John-Jules also revealed that he didn’t get to keep any of The Cat’s outfits, a fact he was thankful for asking “Could you imagine wearing one of those in the streets?”
